Mubarak did the best thing by keeping the borders closed. If he opened the borders , there would have been a mass exodus of Gazans, running away from a massacre. If anytime you know you could be bombed and buried under your cellar, and there is no place to hide; and if you ran out in the streets your chances of being shot or phosphorised is 50 percent. Then of course your first reaction is to take your loved ones and escapes out of Gaza, which would either be to drown in the sea (or shot at out in the sea), or escape to he borders of Israel which would be suicide, or else escape out to Egypt. It would probably be worse than Deir Yassin,..or have we all forgotten. So by closing the Egyptian border, Egypt has stopped a mass exodus from Gaza which would have meant the loss of the Gazan strip to greater Israel. The Palestinians took a good whopping from Israel, but they have learnt the hard way, that when you are firm then weapons of destruction are only momentary and the painful anguish of humiliation is nothing compared to the happiness of keeping your paternal land. The only sad thing are the CHILDREN.

Definitely a good trip, my sweet daughter. The Fish Garden was sort of a highlight in a weird way, though. It was kind of shocking to read the linked article that said it had been all redone. Egypt impressed me with the warmth of its people, its glorious past, and its clearly difficult present.

Thanks for the pictures of Cairo after the rain.
Raindays and enjoying them seems like a just reward for the long dry spells.

hi becca,

i came across your blog by chance and wanted to tell you that i really enjoy reading it! i'm a recent college grad living in nyc- but i'm moving to alexandria in a couple of months to try my hand at teaching english and living abroad. i have been getting anxious about my comfort and safety as a solo female traveler, and your blog has definitely helped allay my concerns! so keep up the good work and if you have any tips about egyptian life (things i should definitely bring, look out for, and so on...) please email me at instantnoelle@yahoo.com. i would love to hear them!
